Nowadays the group’s performance includes interdisciplinary parts, sometimes dance performing, video parts, electronic music. The number of participants-musicians varies from 3 to 7 people plus guests: 2 dancers, singer, electronic musicians...

A painter, a member of Professional Association of Painters and Graphic Artists and of International Federation of Painters, a participant of many personal and collective exhibitions in Russia, France and USA. His acquaintance with shakuhachi-flute started in 1995 when he began to study under the guidance of Om Prakash (Germany), the disciple of one of the oldest Masters of shakuhachi in Japan Koku Nishimura. In 1996—1999 he studied by correspondence with Dai Shi Han (a title) of Meyan School, Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin (USA). In 1998 he attended seminars of Koku Nishimura and Ikkei Nobuhisa Hanada in Germany. In the same year he joined the Japanese music ensemble “Wa-on”, a member and a soloist of which he is up till now.

He also attended master-classes of Kohei Shimizu, Michiaki Okada, Reisho Yonemura, Kifu Mitsuhashi, arranged by Moscow Conservatory. Since 1999 together with Dmitry Kalinin he started to record improvisational music for shakuhachi. In 2000, with the direct participation of Georgy Mnatsakanov was founded ensemble “Wa-on-exp” (in 2005 changed name for PanAsian Ensemble).

Gerogy Mnatsakanov is a leading performer of “PanAsian Ensemble”.

Dmitri Kalinin

Born Moscow, 1975

A composer; a performer on koto (Japanese long cithara) Ikuta-ryu school, shakuhachi, traditional Chinese instruments (gu-cheng cithara, gu-qin, xiao flute, xun ocarina); an expert in traditional Japanese music.

Graduated from Merzlyakov Musical college at P.I.Tsaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (department of composition and musical theory) and P. I. Tsaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (department of composition, class of professors K. K. Batashev and A. B. Bobylev).

Studied koto-playing under the guidance of Keiko Iwahori (Sawai Tadao koto school) since 1995. Twice has taken traineeship in Japan (Kyoto).

In 2004 he was certified to teach koto at school of Sawai Tadao.

In 1996 started to study shakuhachi-playing under the guidance of Kohei Shimizu (Kinko-ryu school), attended master-classes of such performers as Michiaki Okada, Kifu Mitsuhashi, Aoki Shoji etc.)

From 1999 to 2001 was taking his traineeship in Shanhai Conservatory, gu-zheng class (Chinese 21-stringed cithara), studied basics of qin-palying under the guidance of Dai Xiao Liang as well.

From 1996 to 2004 he was a soloist and an artistic director of Japanese music ensemble at P.I.Tsaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory “Wa-on”.

In 2000 together with G. Mnatsakanov he founded the group of experimental music at ensemble “Wa-on” for creating and performing of musical pieces based on non-European traditions (firstly, Far East and South-Eastern Asia).

In his own works he uses the most modern forms of musical language (concrete, electro-acoustic music, collage, performance etc.), however keeping his independence from European musical tradition.

In 2004 together with G. Mnatsakanov he created independent ensemble “PanAsian ensemble”, performing the most modern experimental music as well as Japanese classical one.

The performing carrier of Kalinin D.M. includes many concerts with traditional Japanese and modern music repertoire in numerous concert halls of Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Kazan, Salekhard; participation as a composer and a performer in festival “The Soul of Japan”, “Alternative”, “Ethno and Techno”; joint performances with Japanese musicians, among them some concerts during the tour in Japan (Kyoto, Gifu) and China.

As a performer of his own composition he has taken part in festivals of contemporary music in Amsterdam (2002), “Europe-Asia” in Kazan (2004), “Harbin Spring” (2003, Harbin).

Among  D. M. Kalinin’s own works the most part are compositions for Japanese and Chinese traditional instruments, including interactions with electronics (in sum, more than 100 compositions).

Since 1999 Varvara studies shamisen at Japanese Music Center at Moscow Conservatory under guidance of Keiko Iwahori (Tadao Sawai koto school). She has taken her traineeship in Japan in 2000. She has received brief training in biwa-playing (under Kakujo Nakagawa guidance).

Since 2000 she is a member of experimental music ensemble “Wa-on exp”, which has changed its name for “PanAsian Ensemble” in 2005 (She participates in concerts of Japanese Music ensemble “Wa-on” — если вам охота дать эту фразу еще и в начале, как в русском оригинале). Four disk-records of ensemble were made with her participation (and she is a permanent participant of ensemble?s concerts — это если вам захочется уточнить в третий раз, как в русском оригинале).

Varvara is a member of Professional Association of Painters and Graphic Artists from 1995. Her works were exhibited on personal and collective picture-shows.

Varvara is a professional psychologist and art-therapist as well. She defended PhD thesis on organization and work of consciousness of Russian and Japanese people.
